Ulrich Drechsler's LIMINAL ZONE
Three different bands. Each with its different audience: jazz & world music, club music, contemporary chamber music
ON THE NO-MAN'S-LAND BETWEEN MUSICAL WORLDS
The award-winning clarinetist and saxophonist Ulrich Drechsler is a wanderer between musical worlds. His duets with the pianists Tord Gustavsen or Stefano Battaglia, his cello quartet, the acoustic club music trio "Café Drechsler", film music, and much more are just a few examples of his international success.
Now, with LIMINAL ZONE, he presents a new huge, colorful world of sound, inviting the audience to discover the diversity of his musical work in three independent and at the same time interwoven sound spaces, called Caramel, Azure, and Chrome.
1. CARAMEL : jazz & world music, minimalism
CARAMEL combines the freedom of improvisation with the structural clarity and discipline of classical music, the intensity and emotion of oriental music with the understanding of minimalism and space of Scandinavian music, and much, much more.
In CARAMEL anything may become possible. The radiant voice of Özlem Bulut, the Turkish coloratura soprano with Kurdish roots, touches the listener deeply. She floats above the room-filling, elegant sound of Oliver Steger’s double bass, above the percussion of Raphael Keuschnigg and Amir Ahmadi’s virtuoso piano lines, overflowing with passion and creativity.
CARAMEL means for Ulrich Drechsler to play together across all borders and rules. To create a new common language and mutual understanding through attentive action and listening at eye level. This is the epitome of his music.
2. CHROME : inspirations from the new currents of classical music, neo-classicism, and film music.
Transparency, luminosity, and elegance – that’s CHROME.
CHROME is the idea of a new sound that emerges from absolute silence, gradually composed of fine lines into a graceful whole in which every single note is of fundamental importance. A piece of dreamlike, minimalist music, reduced to the essentials.
Such a project requires extraordinary personalities. Ida Leidl, Simon Schellnegger, and Efe Turumtay – are three highly individual string players who are at home in both classical and popular music. They create the string ensemble sound that gradually envelops the listener in its entirety and creates a fragile carpet of sound. The electronic musician Peter Zirbs weaves around all the finest electronic sound and dub landscapes. Finally, Ulrich Drechsler’s subtle clarinet melodies connect everything.
3. AZURE : exploration of the world of club music
AZURE – the pure joie de vivre.
With „Azure“ Ulrich Drechsler goes on a journey of exploration into the boundless world of electronic sounds, beats, atmospheres, and melodies to explore and mix them with his own musical roots and to define his idea of club sound. Perhaps his greatest musical adventure to date in a completely new territory. He will be accompanied by some truly exceptional artists.
Peter Zirbs, live electronics engineer, sound designer, and an icon of the legendary Viennese club sound, stands with his enormous musical potential for the foundation of „Azure“. Raphael Keuschnigg delivers the merciless live rhythms. Over this sea of sounds and beats, the angelic voice of Loretta Who and Ulrich’s tenor saxophone.
